The mirror simply pulls out and can be swiveled so that you can see yourself on your way out the door; it only takes up 3 inches of space.  The ironing board runs on the same system, it swivels out and has two legs that make ironing easy and quick, our designs also give you a place to store the iron.

What we like to do is to have customers look at the accessories before we complete a final design on the closet so that we can incorporate as many accessories as they may need.  We very often have people order more accessories as they use their closets.

All right we have one month of the year already gone, has the closet been cleaned and clothes organized for winter?  One of the best ways to organize a closet is to go through each section.  Put the clothes on the bed and then do the “weeding” process, one pile for the Good Will, one for consignment, and one that you love and will keep.  If clothes don’t fit either too big or my problem, too small, they need to go out.  Statistics show that most people wear 20% of their clothes; the other 80% is just taking up space.

I have one large Rubber Maid container for the clothes that don’t fit, these are things I love, but need to lose 10 pounds, 15 pounds and so on—it isn’t a pretty plan; but the clothes are out of the closet for now.  The clothes that don’t make it to the container are usually donated.

I have one section of my closet that I put outfits together, bottoms, top, jackets, shoes, and scarves or accessories.  This is great for me because I can quickly find a complete outfit for a meeting, without worrying if it will fit, is it clean, or does it need ironing.  I seem to get a little more creative when I have put some planning into the outfits rather than the usual grab and go.

I organize the rest of the closet into two types one casual and one more professional.  I do have double hanging sections so the pants skirts are on the bottom with blouses on the top level and the same with the casual everyday clothes.

A custom closet is a wonderful treat and you can just do a basic closet that helps you get all this organization off to a good start.  If I would have known about custom closets and their great function I would have saved and purchased one years ago.

Wow, one of the most interesting projects we work on is condos. We have had the opportunity to work on some absolutely wonderful condos; they range from the gorgeous Edgewater units on the water in Bellingham to 650 square foot units that have beautiful views in Seattle.

It seems to me that no matter how large or small the units storage, it is always a problem. Most of the small condos are being bought by young single people who are making their first investment. I love to work with this client because they are so proud of their purchases and most of them have the granite countertops, large bright windows and great amenities, but they have no place to put their clothes, towels, cosmetics, you name it…they can’t find a place for it.

We always start with the master bedroom closets, even though they are small, they can really be utilized by putting in double hanging sections and shelves. Even if they don’t have enough room for drawers, they can buy baskets to put on the shelves for underwear, sox, tee shirts and folded items.

We always try to talk them into doing the entry coat closet, because that can be storage for not only coats but athletic equipment. In the bathroom, most often, we can build shelving on one wall for cosmetics, hair dryers, medicines and etc. This is a great investment because when these young people get ready to sell the new buyer will need the same closets and storage.

I have never really been in a condo I didn’t like, but I have been in lots who need just a little help. These are inexpensive solutions to problems they didn’t think about when they looked at that fabulous view!

Wall Beds are a good way to use space, sort of an old fashion solution, but the new units are not your grandmother’s fold down bed.  Today the new wall beds are a great way to manage your space and still have a comfortable bed for visitors.  The truth is that most people don’t have visitors who stay over all that much, but it is always great to invite that relative or good friend and have a good space for them.

Our wall beds are most often designed around a home office or craft center.   They can make a large room more flexible and give a small room a reason to be there.  Wall beds are a great addition to a condo, because you can have a usable office space in which to pay bills, check email, or read and still be able to accommodate that occasional guest.

Pantries are the most used part of the kitchen and probably the most abused. Builders and remodelers run the gamut from a couple of shelves under a staircase to beautiful walk-in pantries that have everything. For most homes the pantry falls somewhere in between.

Cooking daily requires an easy to access and organized pantry. Our 1960’s home does have a small pantry in the kitchen, it is only two feet wide and very deep, it was very hard to use, and the cans and boxes stuffed way in the back never saw the light of day. We were unable to have the lovely pantry I would have like, but we did put in pull out shelves, and it works fairly well. As long as the shelves are organized you can at least see what you have on hand.

Adjustable shelves make it possible for you to change things around as you need, the wire shelving that comes installed in most new homes doesn’t give you any flexibility. We like to leave about 15-18 inches of space between the floor and first shelf for all those larger items like Costco boxes or animal food.

This might not be the most romantic addition to your home but when you have the ease of putting away groceries, cooking quickly, and just knowing what you have on hand will make a custom pantry worth every penny.

This time of year my house begins to look like it needs spring cleaning and a whole new look.  I think all the Christmas decorations helped to cover up areas that needed attention.  One of the best ways to bring new life to old rooms is to add new colorful accessories, move the pictures around, take clutter out the room, and add some new window coverings.

Window coverings can add a fresh new look to any room and today there are so many to choose from.  The average house has about 25 windows and you certainly don’t need to do them all at once.  Most people, who buy a new home, begin with the metal mini-blinds, they are functional, cheap, and quick, if you are buying an existing home you probably left whatever the previous owner had for window coverings, we bought a 1960’s home and the former owners massive green living room drapes stayed for 6 years, yikes.   Those drapes  should have been in the dump on day two.  This is a good time to plan some new window treatments and start on a new look for spring you don’t want to wait 6 years.

Most of our clients begin with the windows in the front of the house; for the most part those windows should have matching coverings.  So if you are using a wooden shutter you would want to do the front windows in same product and color.  Rooms on the back of the house can be what you want, wooden blinds are a great compliment to shutters, and they are much more economical.  Many of our customers order a couple of windows at a time and just start with one room and move on.

Amazing Spaces has been in business for 8 years and I am always finding one of products to love, right now it is mud rooms. Living in the Northwest with the rainy weather that can hit during any season, a mud room in a house is a must.

Every morning during the work week I get three grandchildren off to school and day care. My daughter has a third grader, a senior in high school, and a three year old, so we are going many different directions with various needs. The main need in the morning is a smooth transition from home to school, car or day care; we don’t want problems trying to find all the back packs, raincoats, gloves, hats, boots and shoes that need to be found before we leave.

I love the article in this month’s Better Homes and Gardens; they have designed a mud room that has everything you need, check it out. You can do an inexpensive mud room, which could be in the garage, by simply taking a couple of plastic milk cartons and place a board on it (from Lowes Home Store, have them cut it) then visit any of the stores to find a small laundry basket for each member of your family that needs one. In the basket go backpacks, books, and lunch boxes. Above each basket put a hook or two for coats that the child can reach it; might look great to have the hooks all lined up, but then the three old can reach her coat. Underneath the bench put a small laundry basket for shoes and boots, most kids wear one of three or four pairs of shoes. Now you are all organized for smooth sailing in the mornings.
